Rendering Velvet

Learn how to hand render velvet using a combination of markers and pencil. Once you have downloaded the reference swatch and the fashion croquis supplied with this lesson, print the fashion croquis to use as your canvas. We will teach you how to render velvet on a full-length evening gown following the contours of the body. You will learn how to position your tools to get the best results and how to shade the illustration for a more polished effect. MODULE 1 • RENDER VELVET

Step Description
1 Begin this lesson, by downloading the fashion croquis and reference swatch supplied with this lesson. Print the fashion croquis to use as your canvas.
2 Position the croquis figure so that it is in the most comfortable position for you.
3 Using the beveled-edge side of your red marker, lay in the color on the dress’s cowl with short strokes, first on the left-side and then on the right.
4 Render the right-side of the dress with the flat side of the marker. The stroke should be continuous, beginning at the underarm and then all the way down to the hem. Go back over the first stroke again in one continuous stroke.
