Rendering Shine

Learn how to hand render shine, using a combination of markers and pencils. Once you have downloaded the reference swatch and the fashion croquis supplied with this lesson, print the fashion croquis to use as your canvas. We will teach you how to use your markers to render a beautiful charmeuse blouse and then how to blend the illustration with pencil. You will learn principles of rendering shine that can be applied to other shiny fabrics such as satin and patent leather.

1 Start this lesson, by downloading the fashion croquis and reference swatch supplied with this lesson. Print the fashion croquis to use as your canvas.
2 Tilt the drawing so that it is in the most comfortable position.
3 Using the pointed end of your Pantone Light Turq marker, lay in the folds and the outline of the right-side of the figure’s collar.
4 Now change to the beveled-edge side of the light turq marker and with the tip, accent the fold and first tie’s edge.
5 Use the flat side of the marker and render the right-side upper blouse and shoulder using short even strokes.
6 Render the right-side lower portion of the blouse, however leave white areas which will suggest shine.
7 Use limited strokes on the first tie, leaving white areas again, to suggest shine.
