Rendering Checks
Learn how to hand render a check pattern on a ruffle neck dress using a combination of markers and pencils. Once you have downloaded the reference swatch and the fashion croquis supplied with this lesson, print the fashion croquis to use as your canvas. We will teach you how to map the pattern and then how to use your markers to render this classic fabric check. You will also learn tricks of the trade on how to further define the pattern and then how to shade the illustration for a very polished look.

MODULE 1 • MAPPING THE CHECK PATTERN
Step | Description |
---|---|
1 | Start this lesson by downloading the fashion croquis and reference swatch supplied with this lesson. Print the fashion croquis to use as your canvas. |
2 | With a second piece of paper under your croquis and your swatch nearby for reference, tilt the croquis so that it is in the most comfortable position for rendering. |
3A | Begin, by drawing in the armhole on the left-side of the figure with your pencil, then proceed to map the lines of the check across the left shoulder and down the sleeve to the cuff. Notice how the lines break at the armhole and how the lines bend with the bend of the elbow. |
