Pivoting a Front Shoulder Dart to an Armhole Dart

In this lesson, you will learn how to transfer your front shoulder dart to an armhole dart. We will demonstrate how easy it is to move the dart and then how to true the bodice to accommodate a dart positioned at the armhole. Learning the steps of how to shift darts will open up many interesting design possibilities for you to explore.

The bodice sloper needed for this lesson can be found and drafted in our Pattern making lesson: Drafting a Shoulder Dart Bodice Sloper from       Measurements. Or you can download and print our free graded Women’s Bodice Slopers (U.S. sizes 2-16) included in our lesson: Pivoting a Bodice Shoulder Dart to a Side Bust Dart. Use our Color Map download to help guide you with the cutting process. The UoF Global Size Chart will assist you in locating your size and size equivalent for the UK, Europe and Asia.

MODULE 1 • Pivoting the Dart

Step Description
1 For this lesson, you will need your front Bodice Sloper with a shoulder dart and waist dart.
2 You will also need a piece of unlined white pattern paper that measures 3” (7.6cm) larger than your front Bodice Sloper on all four sides.
3 Before we start, we must make sure that we have made small holes at the dart vanishing points and at the apex point. Use your awl to punch the holes of the apex point and the dart vanishing points of your sloper.
