Machine-made Buttonholes: Straight & Keyhole

In this lesson, we will demonstrate how to sew a straight and a keyhole buttonhole using a sewing machine attachment and settings on a sewing machine. Once you have decided on the correct size buttonhole for your particular button, we will walk you through the steps on how to sew your choice of buttonhole, either straight or keyhole.

MODULE 1 • Sewing a Straight Buttonhole

Step Description
1 For this lesson, we have attached the buttonhole machine attachment that came with our sewing machine.
2 Our button is placed into the buttonhole attachment, as demonstrated. We have set our machine to the straight buttonhole setting and the size of the hole that we will need for our particular size button. In this case, 1” (2.5cm).
3 We have prepared a piece of fabric with fusible interfacing between the fabric layers to keep the buttonhole from stretching and we have pre-marked our buttonhole on the fabric.
