As technology becomes more integrated into our everyday lives, high-tech textiles, plays an ever increasing role. In this lesson, you will learn the difference between Smart Textiles and Technical Textiles. 1 | Today’s lesson is Textiles 2, an introduction to High-Tech textiles. Included is a description of the basic types of high-tech textiles and their behavioral characteristics. A profile of the major high-tech textiles is listed. Let’s start with the history of high-tech textiles. About two decades ago, offshore production increased. Fabric mills and garment factories expanded in the Asian region, as more U.S. apparel companies focused on lower costs and higher volumes of production. |
2 | In the 21st century, the textile industry is now undergoing a new transformation as more companies shift focus to innovation of high- technology components and smart fabrics. |
3 | The Japanese textile industry produced pioneers in combining traditional designs with technology, notably: Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Junya Watanabe and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. These designers were good at forging natural alliances between the textile industry and high fashion designers, which laid the groundwork for technological advances between designers and scientists or technologists. |
