Drafting a Collared Neckline for Knits

This lesson will teach you how to draft a collared neckline with a placket front for a knit top. You will learn how to interpret measurements on the sketch to determine the width and depth of the front placket, the collar width and point, as well as the placement of the buttons and buttonholes.

MODULE 1 • Collared Neckline Body & Placket Draft

Step	Description
1	Referring to the collared neckline fashion sketch, we will determine the width and depth of the front placket for our size 6 knit top. In this case our placket will be 1” (2.5cm) wide by 6” (15.2cm) long. We will also determine the collar’s back width, which is 3” (7.6cm) and the collar point at 2” (5.1cm).
2	Begin by tracing off your front women’s sleeveless knit T-shirt sloper onto a folded piece of pattern paper. Drop the neckline at center front by 1/4” (6mm) and open the neckline at the shoulder/neckline intersection by 1/8” (3mm). Then blend the new front neckline using red pencil. Be sure that your center front line is at a right angle to center front. Measure the new front neckline and record that measurement. Our front neckline measures 4 ¼” (10.8cm).
