Drafting a Built-up Neckline for Knits
In this lesson, you will learn how to draft a built-up neckline for knits. We will teach you how to how to raise the neckline, how to draft a front and back facing and how to plan for a back zipper. You will also learn how to stabilize the neckline to keep it from stretching.
The sleeveless knit T-shirt sloper needed for this lesson can be found and drafted in our lesson, Drafting a Women’s Fitted Stable Knit T-Shirt from Measurements. And the fabric planned for this draft is a cotton/Lycra single knit jersey.

MODULE 1 • Built-up Neck Draft
| Step | Description |
|---|---|
| 1 | Referring to the built-up neckline fashion sketch, we will determine the following measurements: the height of the built-up neck and how far away from the shoulder/neckline intersection the built-up neckline will sit. |
| 2 | To draft the built-up neckline for knits, we will be using the women’s sleeveless knit T-shirt sloper drafted in our lesson, Drafting a Women’s Fitted Stable Knit T-shirt from Measurements. |
| 3 | Start by tracing-off the front sloper, allowing extra paper at the top for drafting the built-up neck. Then measure in ¼” from the center front/neckline intersection and label it, ‘A’. Measure in ½” (1.3cm) at the shoulder/neckline intersection. Place a mark, and label it, ‘B’. Place another mark 1” (2.5cm) in from the shoulder/neckline intersection and label this ‘C’. At ‘C’, measure up ¼” (6mm) and place another mark and label this as ‘D’. |
