Drafting a Boat Neckline for Knits

Drafting a Boat Neckline for Knits

Drafting a Boat Neckline for Knits

This lesson will teach you how to draft a boat neckline for a stable stretch knit top, one planned for with a clean finish and the other for a fold over neckline, armhole and hem finish. You will learn how to read a fashion sketch to determine the width of the desired shoulder and the front and back neckline drop. You will also learn how to keep the neckline from stretching as you sew.

The sleeveless knit T-shirt sloper needed for this lesson can be found and drafted in our lesson, Drafting a Women’s Fitted Stable Knit T-Shirt from Measurements. And the fabric planned for this draft is a cotton/Lycra single knit jersey.

MODULE 1 • Boatneck Draft with a Clean Finish

Step Description
1 Referring to the boatneck fashion sketch, we will determine the following measurements: the width of the desired shoulder measured from the shoulder/armhole intersection and the front and back neckline drop from center front and center back.
2 Once you have traced-off the front and back sleeveless T-shirt sloper that you drafted in our lesson entitled Drafting a Women’s Fitted Stable Knit T-Shirt from Measurements, mark the front shoulder width at 1 ½” (3.8cm) from the shoulder/armhole intersection and the front neck drop at 3/4” (2cm). Then connect the front shoulder and neck mark with a hip curve and red pencil. Do the same for the back. Be sure that your lines are at a right angle at center front and back.
