Barbara Arata-Gavere began her career as a New York-based fashion designer, designing special occasion dresses for high-end boutiques. She has also designed intimate apparel in the fashion industry.
Barbara is the owner of a custom-design business, Barbarata Exclusive, specializing in Designer Bridal and Formal Wear. She also designs and constructs custom-tailored jackets and coats. As a custom designer, Barbara has experience sewing all types of fabrics and materials including leather, suede and fur, as well as expertise in the design disciplines of draping, pattern making and fitting.
At Bergen County Technical Schools in New Jersey, where she was an instructor for 29 years, Barbara developed the first Fashion Design Program for High School students. During that time, she received several awards, including Teacher of the Year. Barbara was an FCCLA Chapter Advisor and helped to create the first Fashion Design Competition. She was the Models’ Workshop Leader for students and in charge of the the Fashion Show for NJ FCCLA. Her students won many notable awards in the Fashion Design and Entrepreneurship Competitions. Barbara was also the recipient of the Karen Opyoke Outstanding Adviser Award of N.J. FCCLA. While teaching at Bergen Tech, Barbara authored the textbook, “Exploring Fashion Design” which was published by the Curriculum Lab at Rutgers University. This textbook was used in many vocational schools throughout New Jersey.
Barbara holds an AAS degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology, a BA of Art and Design from New Jersey City University (graduated Summa Cum Laude), a New Jersey Teaching Certificate and is a Certified Instructor for Barbizon Modeling School & Agency, NJ.
In addition to her custom design work, Barbara is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC and operates an educational Fashion Design Workshop for high school students in New Jersey.
At the University of Fashion, Barbara shares her knowledge through her draping and sewing lessons.
