WEDDING BELLS ARE RINGING: SPRING 2023 BRIDAL TRENDS

After 2 years of postponed weddings, thanks to Covid, here come the brides! An estimated 2.5 million weddings—the most since 1984—are expected to take place in the U.S. in 2022, according to market-research firm, The Wedding Report. The wedding boom follows a record number of cancellations, postponements, elopements–and lots of Zoom nuptials (yes, it’s true) during the past two years.

“Weddings are, without a doubt, back to pre-pandemic levels,” says Hannah Nowack, Real Weddings editor at The Knot, in an interview with Forbes.

Certainly, some couples will continue to hold intimate micro-weddings, but wedding vendors, venues and planners note a return to traditional ceremonies with larger guest lists. In the second half of 2021, The Knot reported the average guest count to be 110, compared with the pre-pandemic average of 131. And in 2022 the average number of guests is projected to be 129, which is in line with pre-pandemic figures.  “After so many months of planning, and time spent away from loved ones, these couples are eager to reunite and celebrate with a blowout bash,” says Nowack.

Even the White House will host a wedding celebration this year as President Joe Biden’s granddaughter Naomi Biden will marry her longtime love, Peter Neal.

“The President and First Lady will host the wedding reception for their granddaughter Naomi Biden and her fiancée Peter Neal at the White House on November 19, 2022,” Elizabeth Alexander, the communications director for Dr. Jill Biden, tells PEOPLE in a statement. “The First Family, the couple, and their parents are still in the planning stages of all of the wedding festivities and look forward to announcing further details in the coming months.” 

Although Naomi Biden’s upcoming wedding may still be in the planning stages, one thing is for sure, she will have plenty of bridal dresses to chose from as New York Luxury Bridal Fashion Week (NYLBFW) just wrapped up its spring 2023 season (debuting from April 6-8, 2022). The show has finally returned to in-person runway shows and market appointments. A good sign.

NYLBFW, an industry event where bridal designers and brands unveil their latest collections, happens twice a year, October and April, and draws retail buyers, press, and of course, future brides to be. Pre-covid, many bridal labels would host theatrical runway shows, presentations, and intimate events, to fashion insiders; but today, thanks to CFDA’s RUNWAY360, everyone has access to the latest bridal spring 2023 collections.

In an interview with WWD,  The Bridal Council’s executive director Michelle Iacovelli stated, “The wonderful thing is over 13 countries will be represented by designers traveling to New York City, the capital of bridal.” What’s interesting is that even though collections will be presented digitally, the brands will still be in New York doing market appointments, it’s a real hybrid.” She further explained, “The demand is there from the brides. This year is set to be the biggest number of weddings since 1984.”

For all of you brides and bridal designers out there, who are either planning your wedding or interested in bridal’s latest trends, this is for you:

“For the fourth season, The Bridal Council is continuing its partnership with Pullquest to feature the 2023 collections on The Bridal Council x Pullquest’s digital showroom platform. The site will display the online presentation schedule and continue to act as a digital marketing tool and sales platform with collection imagery and videos, downloadable press kits and more for six months following Luxury Bridal Fashion Week,” according to WWD.

Established bridal designers like Monique Lhullier, Marchesa, Amsale, and Anne Barge (to name a few) have all presented, alongside smaller and up-and-coming brands, during a jam-packed three-day virtual and in-person affair. During these shows, brides become inspired by the fashion, accessories, and trends before making their wedding dress plans. Although it is important to keep in mind that a bride should chose a look that they feel comfortable, confident, and beautiful in, they should also be looking for a dress that speaks to their personal style.

This season there were plenty of gorgeous gowns to chose from that ran the gamut – from princess and minimalist to frilly and daring.

SINGULAR SENSATION

One shoulder gowns are making a splash this season!  Designers are opting for asymmetrical dresses, offering their brides a modern and fresh twist for their fairy-tale event.

And that’s a wrap! The excitement of New York Bridal Fashion Week came to an end as the condensed three-day event took place between October 6th to the 8th and there was so much to see. From over-the-top whimsical gowns to minimalistic slip dresses. The event was a hybrid of live runway shows, private appointments, and of course, digital presentations . With many brides having to postpone their wedding due to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, all eyes are on the latest bridal trends for 2022.

“With COVID-19, everyone wanted to come together and have an in-person market, but once we took a look at retailers and bridal designers around the globe, we realized so many people couldn’t travel because of the restrictions. So, we decided to offer a hybrid market this season — the last two were virtual,” Michelle Iacovelli, executive director of the council, stated in an interview with WWD. “We’ll have the Bridal Council x PullQuest platform; there are a handful of designers showing in person, with mostly market appointments. Those showing have showrooms in New York City or are closer by and can easily travel. Those options will be available but a majority of the designers will be on PullQuest.”

“With the hybrid model, whether you’re going to be in-person or not, you’re able to see everything online as well. If you can’t go in person, all of the designers are showing their collections right here on the homepage; if you’re going in person, it’s helpful afterward,” echoed Natalie Meyer, founder of PullQuest.

The October 2021 bridal market marks the third season for The Bridal Council x PullQuest, a digital platform selected by The Bridal Council to virtually bring the bridal market to its global audience and marketplace. According to WWD, PullQuest will continue to serve as a one-stop-shop for designers, offering a unified sales and media hub for the industry. It featured a presentation schedule, downloadable press kits, digital showrooms with collection imagery and videos, and more, as well as a continuation of prior seasons’ streamlined tools for sales (the ability to place wholesale orders), media, influencers and stylists.

The Bridal Council x PullQuest went live on October 6th and will live on the site for six months after market week. This will allow designers in the bridal market to update their content, and for retailers to place reorders. The platform will also be used by media, stylists, and influencers to access and pull looks.

Many CFDA members in the bridal market returned this season including Marchesa, Monique Lhuillier, Naeem Khan, Reem Acra and Vera Wang, as well as designer brands Alexandra Grecco, Amsale, David’s Bridal, Kosibah, Odylyne the Ceremony, PatBO, Verdin New York and Zuhair Murad.

While the season offered plenty of beautiful, traditional gowns, some of the emerging trends for fall 2022 bridal were a bit more unconventional, reflecting a new consumer market…Millennials! Here is a round-up of some of our favorite trends.

BOUDOIR

Lingerie-inspired looks ruled the ready-to-wear runways and the bridal market took notice as corseted gowns were one of the biggest trends for fall 2022. These seductive gowns are the perfect balance of naughty and nice.

BREAKING TRADITION: BRIDAL SPRING 2022

Oh, how I miss attending New York Bridal Fashion Week. The atmosphere was always full of joy and excitement and the presentations were always beautifully executed. While COVID-19 has dramatically changed everyone’s lives, the U.S. is vaccinating its citizens as quickly as possible and hopefully other countries will be able to do so rapidly as well, maybe then we can get back to a “new normal”.

New York Bridal Fashion Week shows twice a year, April and October. Traditionally, the industry event is when bridal brands showcase their latest collections to retailers and the press. Events traditionally range from small intimate appointments and presentations to over-the-top runway extravaganzas. But today, thanks to the pandemic and the virtual nature of fashion shows, we ALL get to have front-row access to the latest bridal collections.

This season, New York Bridal Fashion Week took place from April 6-8, 2021. Established bridal designers like Monique Lhullier, Marchesa, Amsale, and Anne Barge all presented beautiful collections, alongside smaller, indie brands, during a packed three-day virtual affair. The season was coordinated by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), the sole owner and organizer of Fashion Week schedule in collaboration with The Bridal Council.

In a statement to Brides Magazine, Michele Iacovelli, the executive director of The Bridal Council, advised that anyone could watch this year’s collections through The Bridal Council’s website and access the full bridal show schedule, designer videos, and their look books. This is truly exciting news for brides-to-be who are  interested in getting an exclusive look into these coveted events. In addition, for the first time ever, everyone and anyone could access pre-recorded films and video look books via RUNWAY360 on the CFDA’s website.Talk  about transparency!

Leigh King, CFDA’s associate director of special projects and experiences, told Brides Magazine, “As for a return to in-person, we are optimistic for a mix of in-person and virtual presentations in the fall.”

While this bridal season was filled with classic, traditional gowns, fairytale feminism and plenty of sexy numbers – there was also a plethora of fashion-forward looks for the bride who wants to stand out on her wedding day. Here are some of the strongest ‘non-traditional’ trends of the season:

FINE PRINTS

Who says you have to wear white on your wedding day? For Spring 2022, designers are offering whimsical gowns in an assortment of colorful prints and embroideries, such as those from Naeem Khan’s collection of pastel floral confections and Amelia Casablanca’s bright roses. And, did you know that luxury footwear pioneer, Jimmy Choo at age 72, opened the doors of his own JCA | London Fashion Academy in Mayfair in 202o. Hence the addition of the word ‘professor’ to his bridal collection’s company name: The Atelier Couture Prof. Jimmy Choo, OBE Bridal Collection. For those who wonder what OBE means – OBE refers to an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

While broad shoulders played a big role in ready-to-wear this season, with lots of puffy sleeves and shoulder-padded jackets all the rage, for bridal, the focus was on ‘off-the-shoulder’, adding just the right amount of sexiness but in a demure way. WEDDING BELLS: THE FALL 2021 BRIDAL COLLECTIONS GET SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE

While the spring 2021 Woman’s RTW shows were a hybrid mix that has become coined as “Phygital Fashion Week”, bridal designers opted to present their collections digitally on the CFDA’s new ‘ Runway 360’. It seems that the designers have made the right decision as New York COVID numbers are steadily beginning to rise again.

The season kicked off with bridal designers – Justin Alexander, Savannah Miller, Viktor & Rolf, and a number of others – joining forces through Vow Pro, a new initiative that unites wedding professionals to help put an end to child marriage.

On Oct. 9, the Justin Alexander Luxury Group held a roundtable discussion to raise money for Vow to End Child Marriage, the organization in charge of the Vow Pro initiative. Vow ambassador, Princess Mabel van Oranje of the Netherlands, led the discussion and was joined by Justin Alexander’s CEO and creative director Justin Warshaw, partner and development manager Joshua Grimes, and Viktor & Rolf’s CEO Andrea Collesei.

The virtual townhall brought awareness to Vow and the astonishing facts that surround child marriage. According to Vow, more than 12 million girls all over the world are married before the age of 18, some being as young as 8 years old. Child brides are often married to an older man they do not choose themselves and experience abuse throughout the marriage.

All involved in the Vow initiative are not only spreading awareness through social media, but many of the designers involved have also pledged to donate a percentage of sales from their bridal collections, as well as dresses, to the organization. One of Vow’s partners, Reem Acra, will even donate a fixed 10 percent of their sales from her iconic “Paradise” dress. So now brides can shop for a dress and know that a portion of the sale will go to a worthy cause.

The Vow organization will donate 100 percent of the donations made to the organization and distribute it to projects in countries where these underage weddings are taking place. The money is distributed by Girls First Fund, a donor collaborative that encourages community-led efforts to stop child marriage around the world.

As van Oranje reflected on her own wedding as “an absolutely wonderful day,” she continued saying that sadly not every woman has that same experience. “This is across continents, cultures, and religions,” she said. “For them, their wedding day is the day they have to leave school if they were ever allowed to go to school. It is a day when they have to go live with a man, whom they very often haven’t chosen themselves, and in many cases is older than they are. It is the day that they might get pregnant even though their bodies are not ready to give birth and they are really still children.”

In the socially-conscience world we live in, now, brides-to-be can easily get involved in a cause…the fight to end child marriage. Here are some of the strongest trends of the Fall 2021 Bridal season.
