New York City Garment District (7th Avenue) Video Series
Design starts with inspiration. At the University of Fashion, we want to provide you with not only technical skills, but also with history, resources and technological advancements in fabric and production to stretch your imagination and inspire you to create. We have combed (and filmed!) New York City’s Garment District on 7th avenue to bring you a variety of resources which will enhance your design aesthetic and help make your vision a reality.
In our upcoming video series, we will take you on a tour of the famous Mood Fabrics – where rolls of fabric stretch from floor to ceiling and the walls are lined with buttons, trim and tools of the trade. Our fabric tour will continue with the renowned B&J Fabrics as well as M&J Trimming – both considered “go to” stops for not only New York designers, but for designers from around the world. We will introduce you to Libra Leather – where you will marvel at owner Mitch Alfus’ collection of exotic skins.
At the University of Fashion, we are dedicated to bringing you the newest technological trends in fashion. In our new series, we will introduce you to First2Print – a digital fabric printing service that specializes in taking your print vision straight to fabric. You will be amazed at their ability to take “concept to cloth, seamlessly.”
Finally, we appreciate the rich history of New York’s Garment District and look forward to sharing M&S Schmalberg Custom Fabric Flowers‘ story with you. A family owned company since 1916, M&S Schmalberg has been making handmade flowers in fabrications from silk to suede to snakeskin for designers all over the globe. We look forward to giving you an insider’s look into their history, process and recipe for success in the fashion industry.
In preparation for these upcoming videos, try your hand at Rendering Crocodile or creating a Bias Cut Wrap Rose – both available in our current video library at the University of Fashion. And – do not hesitate to let me know where you would like us to visit here in NYC – we love bringing the fashion industry into your living room!
Until next week! -K
