A Little Something Up Our Sleeve…

- - Pattern Making

We are the first to admit that setting a sleeve in a jacket is not the most exciting topic, however, there is nothing more exciting than seeing the perfect slant of a beautifully drafted and finished sleeve on a completed garment.  To get you to the sleeve finish line, we have just posted two brand new videos:  Suit Sleeve From Measurements and Mounting & Fitting a Suit Jacket Sleeve.

First, learn setting a suit sleeve rules...

First, learn how to properly set a sleeve…

…then use your knowledge to break the rules.

At the University of Fashion, we believe that our students must learn the rules in order to effectively break them.  We want to provide you with a solid foundation that you can build on, experiment with and fall back on when you are trying to figure out the technical merit of your designs.  In Suit Sleeve From Measurements, Martha Palaza will teach you how to draft a jacket suit sleeve from measurements taken either from the arm of your dress form or from actual body measurements. You’ll begin by downloading our Sleeve Measurement Chart so that you can easily record your extracted armhole measurements. Once you have learned which measurements to take and the required ease to add, you will begin the suit sleeve drafting process. You will learn how to shape the cap, how to draft a sleeve elbow dart and how to turn your draft into a finished pattern.

In Mounting & Fitting a Suit Jacket Sleeve, the draft you created in Suit Sleeve From Measurements will come to life.  You will see the fruits of your drafting labor as you mount and fit your jacket suit sleeve into the armhole of your jacket muslin. You will learn how to prepare your jacket sleeve and mount your shoulder pad.  Finally, we will share some interesting tricks of the trade on how to adjust the fit of the sleeve so that your jacket sleeves will look perfect, every time.
