An Interview with Carmen Marc Valvo

- - Designer FashionSpeak

As a designer relatively new to the fashion industry, I am thrilled to introduce you to the University of Fashion’s new Designer FashionSpeak Series. In this series, we will bring you up-close and personal interviews with designers working in the industry today. One of the best pieces of fashion advice I have received is “in order to understand the fashion industry, you must experience it.” Think of our Designer FashionSpeak videos as “mini-internships.” First up, Carmen Marc Valvo.

Described by Women’s Wear Daily as a designer who “has demonstrated the talent to do it all,” Carmen Marc Valvo sits down with the University of Fashion in our newest video and shares his words of wisdom. In this video, you will:

Discover Carmen’s path to his own collection. Who was Carmen’s mentor? How did Carmen get his first design job and what was it like to design for someone else? What were the first pieces Carmen designed (hint) and what was his reasoning behind his first collection?

Experience first hand what it is like to dress celebrities. When dressing a celebrity, do designers work directly with the celebrity or a team of stylists? Are pieces designed specifically for celebrities or do they wear existing pieces in Carmen’s collection? What is Queen Latifa really like to dress? Carmen tells all…

Learn how the fashion industry (and Carmen’s company) has evolved since he started his eponymous label in 1989. Carmen discusses the importance of growing with the trends in the fashion industry as well as how licensing has changed the meaning of building a brand.

Hear a very personal take on what responsibilities Carmen would like to leave to someone else and what he loves about his job as a designer. Does Carmen prefer to drape or flat pattern when designing? How best does he communicate his vision – through illustration? How does he feel about retailers and product development?

All of these questions are answered in our newest video Designer FashionSpeak: Carmen Marc Valvo.
