What I Learned After 25+ Years as a Fashion College Professor — Part Two

Banner image of blog topic- What I Learned in My 25+ years as a Fashion College ProfessorThis week’s blog continues my two-part series reflecting on what I learned over more than 25 years as a fashion college professor. My career included 17 years teaching at the Fashion Institute of Technology, followed by 3 years as Chair of the Fashion Design department, and later 6 years teaching graduate-level fashion design at the Academy of Art University. Throughout that time, I had a front-row seat to students’ journeys into the fashion industry, observing how they navigated everything from the application process to making the most of their education once accepted.

In Part One, I focused on helping prospective students understand how to choose and apply to fashion colleges. In Part Two, I shift my focus to fashion educators, offering insight into how they can support students in thriving and creating a meaningful, positive experience once they begin their studies.

Student Insecurities

I still vividly remember my own first day at FIT as a student. Sitting in a class of 200 students selected from a pool of 2,000 applicants, I felt both grateful and overwhelmed. Alongside the excitement came a wave of insecurity: Was I talented enough? Could I keep up with the workload? Had the school made a mistake in accepting me?

That uncertainty quickly eased thanks to my professor. She welcomed the class warmly, invited each of us to introduce ourselves and share where we came from, and immediately created a sense of belonging. She then reviewed the syllabus, emphasized the importance of deadlines, explained attendance and grading policies, and opened the floor for questions.

Throughout my years of teaching, I adopted this same approach. I found that students are far more likely to succeed when they clearly understand expectations from the outset. In later years, the department introduced a detailed grading rubric outlining the criteria for each grade level (A, A-, B, B-, C, C-, D, F). Students were asked to sign this document, which not only helped manage expectations but also supported faculty in addressing the challenges of grade inflation.

As school budgets continue to tighten, many fashion programs have had to eliminate the free tutoring services they once provided. I remember during my time at FIT, top-performing students were hired to support peers who needed extra help managing the workload. Faculty also made themselves available before and after class to guide struggling students. However, union regulations requiring additional compensation for extra hours, combined with budget constraints, gradually brought these valuable support systems to an end. Today, many students are left to navigate these challenges on their own.

That gap is exactly what inspired the creation of University of Fashion. In 2008, I set out to support aspiring fashion students—first by helping them prepare for the fashion school application process, and then by building a comprehensive library of lessons taught by leading fashion college professors and industry professionals. The goal was not only to provide accessible tutoring for students, but also to empower educators.

University of Fashion gives teachers the tools to expand their curriculum and refine their skills without needing to return to school. With limited time and resources, many faculty members benefit from the flexibility of learning and teaching enhancement from home.

Complement not Replacement

It is important to note that University of Fashion was founded as a complement to, not a replacement for, fashion college education. Our mission was to inspire anyone interested in a career in the fashion industry and to preserve the art & craft of fashion for current and future generations. As we celebrate our 18th anniversary, we are proud that we have succeeded in being the first and largest online fashion education resource, not only for aspiring designers, current fashion school students and teachers, but as a resource for anyone who is curious about a fashion career.

Where Art Still Has a Pulse: University of Fashion Celebrates Hand Drawn Fashion

Fashion Illustration by Roberto CalasanzFashion illustrator Roberto Calasanz — from one of his gouache mood illustration lessons. (Image credit: University of Fashion)

This post celebrates our brilliant fashion illustration instructors—artists whose line work is guided not by algorithms but by instinct, observation, and soul. These luminaries have spent decades mastering the eloquence of the hand. They are, in many ways, the unsung pioneers of the very machine-learning artistry now trending online.

Preserving the Hand — The University of Fashion Legacy in an AI Age

Since its founding in 2008, the University of Fashion has held steadfast to one clear mission: to preserve the art and craft of fashion design. Our tagline, “Master Design One Step at a Time,” has remained delightfully unchanged, a rarity in an age that worships constant reinvention.

Why Live Model Sketching Still Belongs to Humans

Of course, evolution is part of any creative discipline, and we’ve embraced it with style. Over the years, digital pattern making, computer-generated illustration, 3D visualization, and even AI-assisted design have joined our curriculum. Yet, at our core, we remain guardians of the tactile traditions — the rhythmic scratch of pencil on paper, the well-placed notch in a pattern, the sweep of a brush translating fabric into fantasy.

Each sketch our instructors produce hums with the irreplaceable pulse of human creativity. Something no bot, however sophisticated its neural net, can quite counterfeit, especially when it pertains to drawing from a live model!

Hand to Paper — The Original Design Technology

And the public agrees. Every time we share one of our drawing demonstration clips on our Instagram, Threads and Facebook page, engagement soars, reaffirming that people still crave the poetry of human touch. That’s why, regardless of what ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Perplexity, or the next digital wunderkind may predict, the University of Fashion will always champion the exquisite imperfection of the hand-drawn line. Because in fashion, as in life, a little humanity never goes out of style.

Bridging Tradition & Technology — Where Pencil Meets Pixel

In the end, the University of Fashion stands as both a sanctuary and a bridge — honoring the lineage of the hand-drawn line while preparing artists for the digital frontiers ahead. Our commitment is not to resist change, but to ensure that progress does not erase provenance. The pencil and the pixel can coexist, but only one can teach us why  beauty moves us. In tracing each curve by hand, our instructors remind the next generation that artistry begins not in code, but in consciousness, a timeless dialogue between mind, hand, and heart

Creating an image with Midjourney starts with a “prompt.” A prompt is simply the text or phrase you will use to tell Midjourney what kind of image you want. Midjourney offers a wide range of command prompts and parameters to refine and customize your creations. In this lesson, Anna will demonstrate how to input your prompts to generate images and then how to tweak them. You will be able to create your own designs and mood boards by communicating with Midjourney and with AI in general. Using this tool will help you to create awesome images and in the end will save you lots of time, once you become proficient using Midjourney.

Celebrating World Creativity & Innovation Day

image of poster frame World Creativity & Innovation Day April 21

The Origin Story of World Creativity and Innovation Day

World Creativity and Innovation Day is celebrated annually on April 21st. The origin of this day can be traced back to Canadian Marci Segal, a creativity and innovation consultant (since 1984) and the author of  books such as Creativity and Personality Type: Tools for Understanding and Inspiring the Many Voices of Creativity and A Quick Guide to the Four Temperaments and Creativity: A Psychological Understanding of Creativity. Segal founded World Creativity and Innovation Day in 2001 with the intention of encouraging people to utilize their natural creative abilities to generate new ideas and ultimately make the world a better place. The date April 21st was chosen as it is the day that precedes Earth Day (April 22nd), emphasizing the crucial role of creativity in fostering a sustainable planet. Initially observed in various countries since 2002, World Creativity and Innovation Day gained official recognition from the United Nations in April 2017 with the first official UN celebration taking place on April 21, 2018.

Ways to Celebrate World Creativity & Innovation Day

Fashion’s AI Early Adopters

Lessons in 3D and AI design at University of Fashion (Image credit: University of Fashion)

Lessons in 3D and AI design at University of Fashion (Image credit: University of Fashion)

In an industry where fashion trends can come and go at warp speed, you’d expect our industry to embrace 3D & AI with open arms. Not so fast.

Over the past 50 years, I have witnessed initial resistance to using CAD tools for drawing and PDS for pattern making. But today the industry can’t imagine doing without programs like Photoshop & Illustrator along with digital pattern drafting and grading tools.

With the launch of our 3D and AI for fashion design lessons at University of Fashion, we have received emails that challenge the use of these tools as “real designing.” However, I’m here to tell you that these are just tools and, they are here to stay. While some people see AI as a threat, and that it could replace certain jobs, the reality is that it’s a tool used to enhance human work.

McKinsey analysts predict Generative AI could boost fashion industry profits by $150 billion to $275 billion by 2030 and in their recent survey claim that “73% of global fashion executives consider generative AI to be an important strategic priority”.

Therefore, embracing AI for tasks like designing, merchandising, production, marketing, promotion and sales is the way to go. In this blog post I will explore how some fashion brands have already incorporated AI into their design process and are even using it to create legacy archives.

In 2023, the Spanish fashion brand Desigual launched its first Online Only On Demand collection. The garments and denim bags were produced once the customer bought them online, with an estimated manufacturing time of 90 days.

This innovation allowed the brand to make better forecasts for raw material needs and logistics. According to Desigual, the key to success in this process has been learning to manage the technology to enhance creativity. This strategy not only improves efficiency but also offers a more personalized and sustainable fashion experience for consumers.

In 2023, designer Norma Kamali partnered with Meta Maison to develop a proprietary AI model trained on her archives. In February 2024, she showcased her AI-generated designs in an installation called, Fashion Hallucinations. Kamali told Glossy magazine, “AI is set to shape the industry’s approach to archiving and to facilitate creative longevity”.

University of Fashion’s NEWEST Lesson: AI: Getting Started with Prompts

Are you ready for the Age of AI?

Let us help you enter the exciting world of AI for Fashion Design. It’s just a tool after all.

Just like a ruler, hip curve and a pencil helps in drafting patterns. And muslin, scissors and a dress form assists in the draping, you can now use AI to help you in the design process. Who doesn’t want another tool in their tool kit?

Image of lesson Getting Started with Prompts

UoF’s newest lesson, AI: Getting Started with Prompts by Anna Leighton (Image credit: UniversityofFashion.com)

So, what’s a Prompt?

Simply put, it’s a tool. Imagine that you are giving directions to your pattern maker. You’re telling her/him/them, “I am looking to create a dress pattern for a size 8 with the following specifications: a sleeveless knee-length sheath silhouette made out of linen, with a scooped neck, embroidery around the neckline and armhole and a back zipper’. Well, in AI language, that is called a prompt.

In our second lesson, AI: Getting Started with Prompts,  Anna Leighton demos how to craft powerful prompts that turn AI from a tool into your creative partner. A great prompt is more than just a description. It’s like a recipe where every word adds richness, detail and depth to your design, ultimately transforming your vision into a stunning reality. In this lesson, you learn how to construct a fashion image from the ground up by carefully describing each design detail, setting the perfect angle, choosing ideal lighting and much more. Focusing on prompting will help you create a captivating image and story with your unique perspective and vision.

You will be able to use these tools to create mood boards and to iterate on ideas. Anna will teach you how!

Get Started with our Introduction to AI Fashion Lesson

You’ll learn about how AI is revolutionizing the fashion industry—from generating styles to optimizing materials and predicting trends. Plus, you’ll learn about powerful AI design tools that can enhance and elevate your own fashion projects.

Next up in our AI series?
